Nuisance RCD tripping - identifying the cause?

Ooof - 400 quid! Like you, I think I could live with manually resetting (well, as long as it never gets as bad again as it did today). Interestingly, many moons ago, I posted in these very forums about my UPS complaining about high line voltage. Scottish Power stuck their monitor on my feed and...

Nuisance RCD tripping - identifying the cause?

Hmmm - I'll check out the server spec to see if it mentions anything about a functional earth (it's a Dell PowerEdge T610 - plugged into an APC SmartUPS 1500). I work with servers all day long at work, and indeed with my own at home, but I've never really considered that they have any special...

Nuisance RCD tripping - identifying the cause?

Sadly, this was all going on whilst I was at work so it was my GF who was at home and running back and forth to reset the RCD otherwise I may have gone round unplugging everything on the circuit and then plugging everything back in one at a time - if it gets as bad as this again, I'll certainly...

Nuisance RCD tripping - identifying the cause?

A question I'm sure the experienced electricians will have heard a zillion times... how do you (inexpensively) identify the cause of nuisance RCD tripping? I've spent the last few hours reading all over the 'net for answers and my head is now buzzing. As briefly as possible, I know pretty...

    Downlight above shower

I'm in a relatively newly built flat (less than a year old) and I've had quite a few lightbulbs blow in that time. I actually started a thread about it a few months ago which led me to getting Scottish Power to fix an over-supply problem (I was measuring the incoming supply using my UPS and it...

    Electrics in new flat

Yeah, spoke to them and they've had nothing like the problems I've had (one neighbour has had two bulbs go in the space of 8 months, the other neighbours have had no problems at all apparently, whereas I've had 11 go in the space of 6 months). Doesn't sound like there's a quick fix and it...

    Electrics in new flat

Yep, I have a few lamps that have energy saving bulbs, and they've all been fine. It's only the 'fixed' lighting (ceiling and walls lights) that've blown?!?

    Electrics in new flat

It was only after Scottish Power put the recorder in the flat that they found the readings were too high (up to 259v, apparently). That's been tweaked down and, according to my UPS, it's not been above 250v since, so I'm going on the assumption that it's within acceptable tolerance levels but...

    Electrics in new flat

Hoping someone can help... amongst several other problems I'm having in my flat (which was built only a year ago) is that I've gone through 11 lightbulbs since I moved in 6 months ago; they blow when the lights are turned on. Obviously not every time a light is switched on, but they've never...

Broken branch off shared waste stack

Heh heh, funnily enough, yes. My other half had obviously been watching too many of these home shows on TV and confidently assured me it's bathrooms and kitchens that sell homes, so I dutifully refurbed the kitchen myself but, because I wasn't sure I could handle doing the bathroom, I got a...

Broken branch off shared waste stack

Yep, that's where waste water from the kitchen comes into the stack, I think. Yep, I was guessing the hole was 200mm but, in hindsight, it would seem unlikely. There's perhaps about 200mm width of silicone caked onto the hole, so obviously the hole will be smaller than that. Like you say...

Broken branch off shared waste stack

Nope, got a further flat above me... it's about 12ft floor to ceiling in these flats and the break is right at floor level in my property so there's at least 12 ft of pipe above the break plus however far up the stack rises in my upstairs neighbour's property.

Broken branch off shared waste stack

Do you mean renew the broken section with a new piece of cast iron pipe, or implement a better fix than just filler (perhaps with the collar type arrangement which, admitedly, I may have just invented)? Is replacing the section of broken pipe a job that a 'regular' plumber could undertake (no...
