Recently, we had a plumber over, who was replacing the gas pipe, and he had the floorboards up - nothing looked out of place (just looked like a load of rubble underneath!) Thank you for responding normally though, I'm not quite sure why people continue to write strange responses - I suppose...

No, no washing in there, the patch this morning is nowhere near window or chimney breast (which is boarded up, but there is a damp problem there). It is now completely dry - it just seemed to appear overnight, so this would indicate not a pipe? No to pets, no it's not our baby either...
