Red & Black cable....can you still use it?

Wow....Thanks for all the detailed reply's. The extension is under building control so unfortunately I can't get away with saying the wiring was done prior to the new colours  I think I had better have a word with the BCO and the Spark that will be doing / signing off the work...

Red & Black cable....can you still use it?

Hi, I've been reading the older topics on this subject but can't find a definite answer. I'm about to start to run the wires for my house extension and I have a few drums of the old colour cable (2.5mm T&E, 1.0mm T&E, 3 core & Earth strapping wire) and I would like to know if it is ok...

House / Building structural question ?

Hi, Just had a look at the dimensions of a 203 x203 UC and notice that the depth Between Fillets = 160.8 mm. Our floor joists are approx 206 mm (seems a strange size) so this would require notching of approx 45mm which seems quite a bit. I'm guessing that fitting timber into the the fillet...

House / Building structural question ?

Thanks for the diagram tony, Sent you a pm. Just wondering if it's worth changing my plans, or my SE :? Cheers.

House / Building structural question ?

My SE has specified 254 x 146 x 43 UB for inner & outer leaf. Rather than having a 254mm downstand I want the floor joists (approx 8 1/4 ") to run into the steel which will minimise it. Using the steel you have mentioned it appears there would be no downstand. May be a change of plan...

House / Building structural question ?

We have a Trussed Purlin in the loft so only 1/2 of the rear roof elevation is on the inner skin, the calcs have a diagram of this so I assume this has been taken into account. Cheers.

House / Building structural question ?

The inner leaf is standard concrete block the sort used in 1970, the SE has assumed 3.5 n/mm2 for it. The end reaction of the inner steel is calculated as being 49 kn...the outer steel being 36.2kn. Cheers.

House / Building structural question ?

Aye the experts don't always know best do they  I did think that once the calcs were submitted the building inspector will want to see the steels fitted as specified which everyone seems to think is well over the top. Is it actualy possible to use a 440mm long padstone if the...

House / Building structural question ?

Ok, contacted the SE who said that it was common practice to specify 2 padstones so as not to bridge the cavity. After explaining that the part of the wall where the padstones would be sitting would now be internal he still maintained that 2 padstones was common practice but said that the...

ultra strong adhesive, rubber to plaster/bricks?

Hi, I've no idea what will be best in your situation with the materials you are using, I do know that PU adhesive makes a very strong flexible bond. Cheers.

Help! Is this lead flashing up to scratch?

I have to agree, "Aesthetically Pleasing" certainly doesn't apply in this case. :(

Help! Is this lead flashing up to scratch?

It's hard to tell from your pictures if the roof is on a shallow pitch, it sort of looks like it is but that could just be the pictures. Step flashing on a shallow pitched roof doesn't always work out or look good because you have to take the horizontal points of the lead out a long way...
