    Over spanned ceiling joists

Ceiling detail was designed by a structural engineer and then passed by structural guys at building control. Just the inspector thats not convinced. The ceiling binder (2No 6x2 bolted together) sits at the half way point of the ceiling joists. It spans 3m. Surly this effectively halves the...

    Over spanned ceiling joists

Hiya, I have an issue with the ceiling joists on my current self build project. I have had all calks done and approved by building control, but the inspector has now said my ceiling joist are over spanned. Currently the joists are 4x2 C24. They are spanned 5.2m with a bolted double 6x2...

Vent stack needed for toilet only?

Have you thought about using an AAV (Automatic Air Vent). This would allow for venting of the stack without having to take it all the way up through the roof. I think it is common practice to then use a 4"AAV or reduce to 3"pipe and a 3"AAV. However if the water runs quickly away and there...

Mains water system flush via pump valves?

Might be a stupid question, but why do Powerflush systems have such huge pumps if pressure doesn't better the cleaning. And if the pump is designed to push large volumes of water though the system, this basically equates to the same thing, right! :?

    UFH system

I know a lot of the heat will go downwards without much insulation, but radiators are ugly and heat the wrong half of the room! I'm looking for the best solution with UFH, not the best solution to heat the room.

    Levelling a Bath

Get yourself a laser level. Stanley sell them for around 100 quid. An invaluable tool when fitting baths or anything that needs to be level over a long distance. Normal bubble levels can be affected by tiny lumps and bumps in the casting of the bath. A laser level will just show where they are...

    UFH system

Hiya, I am currently renovating my lounge and have decided to put in underfloor heating. I am planning on tiling the area but I'm concerned about which type of ufh to use. There is currently a 50mm screed layed with scope to add another 15mm on top before tiling. The only trouble is the...

Underfloor Insulation? What can I use?

Triso Super 10 is good stuff. Can get hold of it a Travis Perkins. It's expensive though. Might get some cheaper on ebay. It apparently has a U value nearing 60mm of celotex. Is only about 6mm thick and comes on a roll. you can staple it to the under side of the joists. I have done a job...

    UFH on Concrete Oversite

I have been thinking about putting wet underfloor heating in my living room, but don't have much height to play with. Polypipe do an overlay system which would fit, but my main concern is with floor insulation. I live in a bungalow built in 1961, and as far as I can tell there is no...

    Gas not powerful enough?

It is quite normal to have to upsize the gas when installing a new boiler. If the boiler is going to be around 30kw and it is not close to the meter, you will more than likely have to up to 28 or 32mm.

    Mains Gas Pipe

2m of 8inch solid wall sticking out perpendicular from the front of the house. Meter is on the left hand side of the wall. I want it on the right.

    Mains Gas Pipe

am I right in saying it needs to be 450mm under the ground. Dig a couple of half meter deep holes either side of the wall for them.

    Mains Gas Pipe

currently external to external on the other side of solid wall. its current position will mean the meter will be in my porch when its built.
