How to Connect Multiple CAT6 Ethernet Cables

Yep, perfect. You could even add additional switches downstream at any or all of the 4 Ethernet outlets. Do you definitely have 4 LAN ports available on your router? Some only have 4 total ports and one ends up being the WAN port with an external modem/ONT setup like yours. Others have a...

What's your average single phase measured voltage? Is 251V at point of measurement common?

Interesting… ENWL are my DNO too (South Manchester/Altrincham), so maybe the drops are a result of this.

What's your average single phase measured voltage? Is 251V at point of measurement common?

One halloween a few years ago we experienced a brownout. It was strange, as all the LED lights that we have remained at full brightness (as far as we could tell) but the hairdryer was running very slowly, the TV didn't work at all but the Sonos speakers did, and the one remaining filament lamp...

What's your average single phase measured voltage? Is 251V at point of measurement common?

All agreed @JohnW2. I did say in my original post that I was looped from next door and I was suggesting that the “lows” that I see might be due to next door using heavy loads. Out of interest, do people agree that the 20+ volt difference I see throughout the day is somewhat unusual?

What's your average single phase measured voltage? Is 251V at point of measurement common?

I was referring to the cable that the neighbour and I share from the street, rather than all the way back to the transformer.

What's your average single phase measured voltage? Is 251V at point of measurement common?

Didn't stay up too late last night so could only get the following at 21:30: Here is an example of a "sag" at 19:45, with a low load of 150w from my installation:

What's your average single phase measured voltage? Is 251V at point of measurement common?

Yes, agreed. I suspect that the highs are due to being relatively densely populated area and the lows are when next door run something high power at a peak time (i.e. large drop across our shared cable when the voltage is already low). I will get pictures to demonstrate.

What's your average single phase measured voltage? Is 251V at point of measurement common?

I often see 253 late at night. We’re about 350m from the transformer, and looped from next door. Often see dips to 230, it’s noticeable in the summer with a fan on as you hear the pitch change. I’ll get some pics of my cheapo plug in meter.

    Looped supply

Looks like split concentric to me due to the taped up earth coming out of the bottom of the head.

    Looped supply

Much more likely that it’s split concentric cable rather than SWA. I also live in a 1930s semi and we have a split concentric cable which disappears under the floorboards and goes towards the party wall. I know it’s split concentric as I’ve seen inside my cutout when the meter has been changed...

    Undercupboard lights

We put LED strip in our new kitchen here back in 2019 and still really happy with it. It’s stuck to the back of the pelmet at the front facing down and lights up the worktop very well.

    Off-peak supply not turning on?

Separate supplies to the flat in the first pic then so no contractor. As already mentioned, need the full shot following meter change to see what’s happening with those connections at the bottom right.

    Off-peak supply not turning on?

Flats often use contacters to avoid running two supplies from the meter cupboard to each flat. The contacter signals the storage heater circuits to come on when the meter changes to off peak. If there is a contactor, then there’s a few things to check here. There’s usually a small circuit to...

    Socket issue

Have the sockets ever worked? If they have worked but have since stopped working, did anything change, i.e. putting pictures up, shelves up? From your description you do need a spark but it would be good to be prepared with some answers to the questions they may ask you. How confident are you...

    Guess what’s causing this fault

I once had a class II vacuum cleaner where the flex had frayed at the cord grip in the plug. Was using it one day and the RCD tripped after the vacuum stopped/started a few times when wriggling the flex around. Rewired the plug after chopping off the dodgy bit of flex and it never happened...
