    How many bricks a day?

This is interesting, I can only assume that these numbers are coming from real bricklayers. The ones in the pub seem to be able to lay much more lol! I agree though. I am more than happy to get through 4-500 a day on good work, in an around windows, doors and the odd oversail course. I would...

new extension - wooden joist floor has sunk

This is a common problem with heated floors. Not normally a 'support' problem, simply everything shrinks, just that with carpet you don't notice! Been in loads of older properties and seen black edges to the carpet because the skirts/etc have shrunk and that is without underfloor heating. I...

    How many bricks a day?

At last a voice of reason. Other than on gable ends or industrial units, I've never seen 1000 a day that I would be happy to pay for on my own house. Us brickies are our own worst enemy when it comes to the perenial question of how many a day. I mean, how long is a piece of string :twisted...

    Brick Match - Any Ideas?

Hi Dan, One problem I've had many times with jobs like this, is numbers. You can call all over to try and find a match, but the first question you get is, 'how many do you want?' and you say, a hundred. Oh they say. Re the mortar though, it is most definitely a cement based one, so...

    my workman ect

I agree that times are hard right now for many. Much maintenance money is being mothballed and lots of new stuff just isn't happening as folk batten down the hatches. If you are getting leads and its working, kudos to the scheme, you have to keep up with a changing world. Like they say, if...

The 'AA' say we are getting worse at DIY.....is it true?

Pred I am a pro too, but looking at some of the work in the rogues gallery, it looks like they consulted the Beano! Some interesting results tho... The age spread is almost even throughout the range, although you need more gurls (didn't we always!) as 92% of the respondents were of the...

Cheers, quite a few responses to look at tomorrow :D Re the AA, it was the Home Insurance part of the auto club! The report is here.... http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/news/home-emergencies-diy-skills-to-become-extinct.html....if anyone wants the 'facts'. Apparently we are all...

The 'AA' say we are getting worse at DIY.....is it true?

I wonder if I could get some help from you guys with some research I am doing? The AA recently published a report saying that DIY could be 'extinct' by 2043. I'd like to find out just how true this is. Are we really getting less interested or able at DIY and are we not teaching our kids how...

Downlights - lath plaster - Firehoods.

Quite agree, is it really true that there are people who don't have LED's these days.....

    Replace lath and plaster?

You must be joking, sure 'punching' a lath and plaster wall might not make a hole but it sure will break off a whole bunch of 'keys' or 'nibs' rendering a big chunk of the wall useless.

Downlights - lath plaster - Firehoods.

Quite agree! The fire aspect in a domestic situation is largely irrelevant, the simple truth is that it's a complete pain to drill lath and plaster and get neat holes suitable for downlights. Loads of times we've had to cut holes out of ceilings, fitting joist width plasterboard squares...
