This is a common problem with heated floors. Not normally a 'support' problem, simply everything shrinks, just that with carpet you don't notice! Been in loads of older properties and seen black edges to the carpet because the skirts/etc have shrunk and that is without underfloor heating. I...

You must be joking, sure 'punching' a lath and plaster wall might not make a hole but it sure will break off a whole bunch of 'keys' or 'nibs' rendering a big chunk of the wall useless.

Quite agree! The fire aspect in a domestic situation is largely irrelevant, the simple truth is that it's a complete pain to drill lath and plaster and get neat holes suitable for downlights. Loads of times we've had to cut holes out of ceilings, fitting joist width plasterboard squares...
