Electrical penetrations in 30 minute fire ceiling

I appreciate the response and do understand, however building regs have changed a lot since I was qualified, and this is a building regs question. There is no sparkie doing the installation because the installation is already there - this is adding a 30min fire rated ceiling around what is...

Electrical penetrations in 30 minute fire ceiling

Hi all, Not sure if this should be in electrical or one of the other forums but sure the problem is encountered a lot more here! Have also tried searching and can't find the answer. Just wondering what the correct method is for protecting cables penetrating a 30 minute fire ceiling? I can...

Correct way of upgrading insulation for existing (1980s) timber frame section of house

Thanks woody, could you please elaborate? Do you mean VPL type sheathing (which there is between frame and internal plasterboard or timber sheathing (ply, OSB or something?) on the outside before the cladding? I'm not sure on the answer to question 2, but pretty sure I haven't seen any in the...

Correct way of upgrading insulation for existing (1980s) timber frame section of house

Thank you, everything I've learnt has been through a DIY journey with so much coming from here. Can I just check if the PIR should be foil taped as if doing it internally and would I batten through the 25mm PIR to create the ventilated void?

Adding short UFH loops - Manifold/Mixer or direct?

Thank you for the helpful response. Getting to the existing manifolds would increase the loop lengths by at least 20m (10m on each F/R leg) and would be quite destructive so trying to avoid! Could you please clarify what FHV and RTL mean? Thanks

Correct way of upgrading insulation for existing (1980s) timber frame section of house

Hi all, Final step in our renovations is to sort out the insulation in a timber frame 'overhang' section of my daughters bedroom. The rest of the house is brick and overall this section is relatively small. The make up appears to be the timber frame with c.50mm of fibreglass insulation...

Adding short UFH loops - Manifold/Mixer or direct?

Hi all, Can anyone please suggest solution to adding two small (c.18 and c.12m) loops to an existing heating setup that consists, in short, of: UFH throughout downstairs, split across 2 manifolds each with a mixer and pump set but no temperature control other than mixer and flow rate Large K2...

Silicone sealant when one surface has a grain?

Morning all, Does anyone have any advice on how to do silicone sealant neatly when one surface to be sealed has a wood grain? In this case it’s a white tile splashback to solid wood worktop with white sealant. When I smooth it off the sealant ‘bleeds’ into the grain slightly and I’ve been using...

Building regs for underground surface water tank

Hi all, We’re planning to have a drive redone and as part of the works planning to have a couple of large tanks to divert surface water to as we live in a high risk environment. New soakaway for on catchment surface water will be sized and located as per regs but I can’t find anything anywhere...

    Expanding silicone sealant?

Hi all, Feels most relevant in the ‘Building’ section. Is there such a thing as expanding silicone sealant, or a.n.other waterproof sealant? Basically waterproof properties of silicone with gap filling of foam? We live in a flood resistant property and need to make a soil pipe penetration...

Brining a water supply in externally?

Hi all, We have an extension that at some point we would ideally take a water feed to - due to a number of factors, going through the house is not possible. We have our mains water pipe in the drive that we could connect to. My understanding is that any mains water feed has to be buried at a...

Part J: help interpreting combustible materials regs

Hi all, Having a challenge interpreting Part J of building regs, specifically distance from log burner to combustible materials; in this case an oak mantel we are about to install. Our Stovax Stockton 5 stove just lists ‘N/A’ as distance required above the stove. My (perhaps incorrect)...

    Understanding RSJ fireproofing/compartments

Good morning experts, Just looking for some advice to help with some post flood renovations that we are doing. We are creating a new ensuite in an existing garage conversion that has a bedroom above. Structure isn't changing, just gutted it because of an abysmal (but bc signed off) insulation...
