i did just that after posting the question, answer is you can connect both hoses to the cold pipe using a T connector but the programs will run slower, i presume because the w/m would have to heat the water. thanks for your help, but no thanks for the sarky remark :-))

my inlet is cold pipe only but w/m takes both hot and cold, can i connect only cold and ignore or close off hot inlet on back of w/m or do i need a plumber to run a hot pipe and connect it
