What does the back fill do ? Is it to allow drainage behind the wall to prevent the wall from being constantly damp ?
Also do I definitely need ties for a small wall ?

dammit, ripped up the floor to find no leaks, nothing. I can see the pipes for much of the length of the house and no leaks or damp . Guess it must have been my own breath after all
