The reason he gave for doing that was "so that if the power trips again you still have your hot water and heating" J

OK - thanks for all your input guys, I'm curious about these things and love to know how things work, you've all helped me learn a little more about my setup which I can inform the electrician about when he comes.

Would there be a reason for that or should I discard it?

As far as I'm aware yes as there is no power to the alarm and its not turned on anyware. I've noticed something else; Please excuse my shoddy drawing - The big pink circle to the left is everything connected to the N bar in question plus the oven (I believe to be the alarm or something else...

Yeah thats why i called him out the first time - he "sorted" this but recommended a new CU as the wiring of the existing one was "bad" which i thought was a good idea not knowing the history of the house :(

It does - but I think (and i've just recently moved in) these are to do with a legacy alarm system that isn't powered on and I've never seen it on!

Your 100% correct. There's a live wire going along the bottom underneath the plastic to boiler MCB. It was to late to get anyone else he had been already :( I have reported him to NAPIT and they are pursuing legal action. Looks like I need to get a competent spark out to redo it now. Hard...

Yeah everything apart from the boiler, that's the MCB at the far left in the pic. It's the only circuit not on the RCD.

I don't know I'm not an electrician, I have another thread on here all about the cowboy who put in my CU box... Could that be part of the problem? I'm worried about getting a good honest electrician because of my past experience.

Well I got home and tried the oven, still tripping the RCD. I wired the oven directly to the switch but no luck. Didn't see any visible nicks in the cabling. I did have the consumer unit replaced recently so don't know if its the wiring in that? Here's some pics: Straight in to the switch...
