Ah right, I understand what you mean. Not a bad idea although the steel would always be on show which I’m not so keen on. I have a one of these cable cameras that you can put down small spaces and there are no signs of screws or bolts holding it in place. Two dowels attaching it into the...
Hi, appreciate the comment. Not sure I quite understand what you mean?
Do you know if this newel post would be structural for the stair case? I don’t believe it is - I lifted some floor boards and the newel post has been cut around them so it must’ve been installed after the staircase went in...
I recently moved in to a 1970s ex council house and decided the stair balustrade needed a makeover. I removed the bottom newel post fine, but I have some hesitations about the top one. I would’ve ideally just cut the top one and used a zip bolt onto my new post but you can see my issue for...
Hi William, great job on the stairs. I am taking on a similar task but do not have then bull nose step. I am preparing to mortice my newel post but found the tenon is slightly squint (see image below). Did you have a similar issue? Can’t seem to find much help online and yours looks like the...
Hi folks,
I am renovating my staircase and had to remove the old newel posts as they were twisted, not centre on stringer, and also not square! I’ve removed the bottom one first, and marked up where I need to cut on my new post (assuming everything is plum).
I’ve been a little hesitant to cut...
What I was trying to "achieve" was cladding the newel post. We have just recently moved into this house and the banister is needing a makeover. I assumed the post would be square but when we got in and I measured, it was not. You get various cladding packs now from online stores specifically for...
Yeah, I did consider both of these options. I think I would rather try enlarge them to 90 x 90 mm square as they look slightly odd with the shape they are now. Definitely food for thought - thanks!
Hi folks,
I am looking to renovate staircase and was hoping to clad the existing newel posts however after measuring them, I found they are rectangular (90mm x 80mm) and not square, I cannot seem to find any parts online for this - every website offers square post parts only.
Has anyone came...
Ah I see. Did you remove the boards before finding that water was coming in? If so, did you find it easy enough to do? I have not had a proper look yet to see where it is fixed in etc.
How easy is it to remove these? Might be a daft question but i have recently moved in somewhere that these celotex boards are sagging severely and there is a lot of condensation in the loft space
