    It is a screw type yes, how do I find out which is the switch live mate? I have one of those little screw drivers that can test for current! Will this suffice?

    Top one is for the pull chord Bottom is for the light, blacks together and reds together, I know now that this is incorrect, No markings on the black wires, yes I have had to make alternative fixings to the ceiling, just screwed straight into the joist, pretty certain I haven't gone through...

    I'm not a 100% sure they were to be honest mate, I'm still none the wiser :( Correct me if I'm wrong, after looking at the diagram bottom right, am I right in thinking that the two reds go together, and one of the blacks goes in with the reds?

    When I took the old light down, there were two sets of wires coming from the ceiling, and the two reds were twisted together, and the two blacks were twisted together, I assumed the reds were live and the blacks were neutral and connected them to the new light accordingly!

    Aragorn84, yes you are correct, I did put the blacks together at the light fitting! I take it that this is the problem? How do I rectify it?

    No mate, sorry I should have clarified, I attached the earth wire to the little brass connection point inside the plastic unit, which is assume is the earth terminal

    Yes it is on the cooker circuit. the cooker switch will be for the hob and oven only as it will be going inside one of the base cupboards and i have plenty of sockets on the main ring circuit. so will i be ok then with what i had originally intended?
