Simply because the boiler "needs to know" it's full of water to stop it dry firing. Most boilers have a low pressure switch in them for this purpose.

I'd be curious to know why. I don't see how the orientation of the vessel will affect its performance, given that part of it contains water, and part of it contains air.

The red button will either unscrew, letiing air out, or some just need gently pulling up.

I never use gate valves now because they seize quite quickly, or never close properly when you want them to. Use a lever valve instead.

Join the two valves together with some temporary bodge plastic pipe, open valves and turn heating on, you'll know then.
