You say this was one switch of three on a multi switch system,and appeared to be double pole?If all three swiches control the same light then this is obviosly an intermediate,which to the un electrically minded can appear to be double pole,did you look behind the other two swiches?Probably find...

Ive had this before,turned out that tiles were bedded directly onto 1/2" sand/cement mix rendered on.Only way wasto make hole in backing and take the whole lot of,eg chisel behind sand/scement.Came away quite cleanly,then just dot n dab plasterboards back.Much much easier,and certainly quicker.
