sorry, I am confused. The cold water works fine on its own and the pressure is great. As is the hot water. What would a pump do differently?

Hi, I have moved in to a new flat which has a shower mixer attached to the bath taps. Both hot and cold water work fine but when I try to mix them I can only have too hot or too cold. Any advice would be appreciated. Thx.
