The mechanic did mention about changing both shock absorbers. Just before I bought the car, turns out the previous owner had had one replaced. That's only been on the car 6 months so the mechanic just replaced the other (broken) one. The garage has ordered the part so should be done early...

Just spoken to my mechanic again and he is reluctant to change it. He says they *do* deteriorate on Fiestas but in his experience you can tell because there is a lot of play in the steering wheel and joint and there isn't any on my car. So no further forward. :(
