Thanks for your comments so far. Right you are, ree, here is a photo of the outside. We have never observed any damp but have only been in the property since last summer. It's a first floor bay window.

I was stripping wallpaper and found that a section of plaster came loose under the bay window. I removed what was loose and it has revealed that the brick underneath is loose too. I haven't removed more plaster, but should I? Should I just get some (lime) mortar and try to fix it back in place...
