As part of the redecoration of the rear part of the living room in my Victorian terrace, I'm repainting the cupboard which a previous owner installed in the old chimney breast. The photo shows the gap between the frame and the wall. Is caulk the best way to fill this, or is there a better way...

I think it's unlikely that there are pipes running up through this section - these doors are at the front of the house, and all the plumbing is at the back.
