Did you leave a gap between board and wall or just fix the board straight on to the brickwork?

It is a cavity wall and has no damp.

I’d like to insulate an external wall from inside. I was thinking of fixing timbers to the wall and then using earthwool between the timbers then boarding over it. Would I need to leave a gap between the brick wall and the insulation?
