Ideas for alcove in bedroom please? (with pics)

Hmmm, tempting as the "lifestyle" choices are, I might play it safe and go for the wardrobe option  Now what to do with that understairs cupboard...

Ideas for alcove in bedroom please? (with pics)

This is the corner of my bedroom - the "plinth" at the bottom left behind the stud wall is over the stairs (and can't be removed). Can anyone give me some bright ideas on how to use this space? Current plan is to extend the stud wall and put in a standard door so it could be used as a walk-in...

Soundproofing an RSJ (!) (with pics)

Thanks for all the suggestions :) hadn't thought of wrapping it in a sheet, will look into that. As you can just about see on the right of the 2nd picture I have filled around all the joists with mortar (+ brick for larger gaps). The ones in the bay are loose and waiting for me to level them...

Filling under window board (with pics)

Thanks, will go slow - been told before it's scary stuff

Soundproofing an RSJ (!) (with pics)

Thanks, was thinking about double boarding the ceiling. The plan is to put soundcoat on the party wall then build an independent stud wall with rockwool and double board - got some good advice about that on here a while ago, just getting round to actually doing it!

Filling under window board (with pics)

Hi all, Found when I took the plaster off the walls (1930's semi) that the top course of bricks (internal leaf) under my windows was just sat there with no mortar, plastered over with the gap between bricks and window boards "filled" with plaster. I've mortared the bricks in: (don't...

Soundproofing an RSJ (!) (with pics)

Hi all, I am undertaking a (lengthy!) programme of soundproofing in my 1930's semi. On taking down the ceiling in my living room I found that the wall above the bay window is supported by an RSJ which goes right through from my house to the neighbour's: It seems (from an informal...

Thanks for the advice, will get on it at the weekend :)

    Bricking up fireplace (with pics)

I've unbricked a bricked-up fireplace in my 1930's house, with the intention of putting an airbrick in (there was none): As you can see, it's a bit of a mess  and I think I might have gone a bit far... When I took the plaster off there was a gap under the lintel (I hope?) at...

internal doors: which way should they open?

Thanks for the answers, will try to work out what I think is best :) Light switch behind door is definitely not part of that  Amazing how many little things you (I) start wondering about when you start on this DIY stuff...

internal doors: which way should they open?

Maybe a silly question but... I am replacing doors throughout my house. In both bedrooms the door is in the corner of the room at the left. In bedroom 1 the hinge is on the right. In bedroom 2 the hinge is on the left - I suspect this one has been changed because it blocks the light switch...

Boarding over plaster & lath ceiling: noggings+one man j

Thanks for the reassurance, I'll probably end up giving it a go myself. I wondered a couple of things: i) did you use "full size" boards?, ii) was there a reason for taking down the ceiling before boarding - I was planning to board over to the avoid the mess and possibly uneven joists?

Boarding over plaster & lath ceiling: noggings+one man j

I'm planning to board over a plaster & lath ceiling and have been reading all the posts about this I could find.. Question 1: Reading the white book suggests that noggings are mostly required to support board edges. If I understand the forum posts the common practice is just to fix boards at...

    Plasterboarding studwork with irregular gaps

Thanks, will do vertically - strangely enough I don't find too many friends enthusiastically volunteering to lend a hand ;)

    Plasterboarding studwork with irregular gaps

Thanks for the suggestion but... I'm a bit confused - whitebook says 450mm/600mm between studs (height is 2400mm). Adding additional studs is going to be a pain - wouldn't I have to take out existing noggings (or can I add uprights attaching to the noggings?). Could I also: a) Add...
