Since yesterday I have noticed that the boiler goes off and then I hear the banging followed by a load of steaming water gushing into the tank. When I say the boiler goes off I mean all the lights go out.

Could the bypass not be the kitchen radiator with the drain off valve? This one does not have a TRV so would always be permanently on. It also happens (from what I have noticed) to be the first radiator to warm up. May just have to get an engineer round to tell me what kind of bypass I have...
