    Opening up a staircase

It's definately not a load bearing wall, but i'm not sure what it's made of, and it's a pain for me to find out too because we're not in the house yet.. but i'm pleased to hear it would only be a days work. That makes it a lot easier for me to budget into my renovation costs. Thanks deluks

    Redecorating

hard to tell from the picture, but just looks like dodgy plastering to me.. perhaps some previous owner nocked a hole in the wall by accident and filled it with anything they could. just clean it out and re plaster, i can't see it being a problem if that is all it is.

    Painting kitchen worksurfaces?

DONT PAINT IT!! it's not good, it looks tacky, it will peel and flake, and i dont think it can be hygenic either. check out some discount stores where you can just replace the surfaces. ike do them, and they're good value.

Help with an alcoved feature wall

I would say it depends on where your main light source is coming from.. i'm an interior designer, and my standard "formula" when decorating a room is the wall with the window the lightest, the 2 walls next to the window medium, and the walls opposite the window darkest. If your archways are...

Lime Waxing floorboards -Any advice appreciated

I limewaxed my mums cupboards in her kitchen and it came out really well. if thats the effect you want (a white wood rather than a painted colour) i'd say go with lime wax. As long as the boards are completely cleam and varnish free, lime waxings easy. it's what i like to call "dib, dab, rub" :)...

    Opening up a staircase

Apologies if this has been answered before, i've had a brief look and couldn't find anything.. I'm just about to buy my first house, and the one we are most likely to make an offer on seems almost perfect, it has the biggest rooms, it's cheap, has a good size garden, good development...
