1960s rafter/purlin roof - using binders to support a dormer

Thanks Tony. I've actually appointed a structural engineer to complete plans and calculations, who has suggested removing the binders. Regarding the electrics, is it common to have a separate circuit breaker for the loft, serving a new ring main, lighting ring and electric shower radial?

1960s rafter/purlin roof - using binders to support a dormer

Hi Haven't been on the forums in a while, but was wondering if someone could answer a simple question. I'm planning for a dormer conversion, and my roof looks as attached. I have three 2x5" binders that run from party wall to party wall. However, these sit above the ceiling joists...

    Fluke 1653

http://www.test4less.co.uk/results.asp?menuselect=e&CategoryID=15 All the decent ones are around the £600 mark, which I don't mind spending but I want to make sure I get the best one. The Alphatek seem better speced.

    Are Alphatech any good?

    Fluke 1653

Good question, actually. I was considering the lower spec 1651, but would be tempted to splash out on the 1653.

    Pic of the week

I'm a mister. I've deliberately held off from doing any sort of electrical work until I've cleared up on the procedures hence I've just been plastering today. I had the isolator fit today, but the British Gas man couldn't do anything about the lack of earth clamp on the incoming supply. He...

We all start from somewhere and as my background is in accounts not engineering, I figure this could be a personal challenge. There is an earth connection, but aren't current standards 16mm? I can't test the Ze but as soon as the CU and circuits are in, then I can test. I was thinking about...

I haven't notified Building Control as yet. I wanted to use this as my major works so NIC can verify it allowing me to join their domestic installers scheme.

I should have asked for PME actually, I wasn't thinking. I've got new metre tails already - 25mm harmanised colours - and an 8-way earth block, so I'll see if they can connect it up. Demands - downstairs & upstairs sockets and lights - 4 circuits. plus smoke detectors. that's it. But I've...

I know how you forumites love pics, so here goes mine. This is a pic of my bro's fuseboard. I have the pleasure of rewiring his house from scratch with a brand new Wylex NHRS12SL at the heart of the system. Now we've called the suppliers and they will be fitting an isolator tomorrow. When...

I got electrocuted! A few questions....

If this doesn't put people off domestic electrical DIY, I don't know what will. Seriously though, I'm still looking for an electrician in the London area that I can perhaps train with. I'm educated to degree level, have own tools and transport and have recently completed my intermediate...

I got electrocuted! A few questions....

Say for example, if an unwitting soul happened to be changing a light fitting - unknowingly that the circuit was still live -and happened to touch the live and earth, could they have a fatal shock?

I got electrocuted! A few questions....

Wouldn't this have triggered the MCB/fuse?
