    Having made a couple of tests, I can report that a 5.0 x 50 mm wood screw connects 18 mm MDF board to a 38 mm worktop well enough that I'd have to break the MDF board to separate them. So yes, nothing special is needed.

    So a standard tapered wood screw should be fine to bite into MDF and pull it to the worktop? The weight of the worktop will certainly do some of the work, but mine are slightly bowed so I want something that is guaranteed not to pull out when tightened up as far as possible.
