Hello thanks for getting back.. Forgive me for being daft, I have a multiple meter is this the type of thing you used to test it if so how ?

My heater had burnt out (I checked this by putting an electrical meter across the terminals and there was no conductivity); replacing it solved the problem and the machine now completes the cycle. I bought the new part on eBay; you can get various versions - I got one labelled "genuine alternative" as I wanted to be sure it was identical to the Hotpoint one but simply lacking the brand label. I can't remember the supplier but try LM Electrical or similar.
