personally any fitter would say to lay in an empty room - much much easier.. the only problem is to make sure that there is still an expansion gap when any pipework or cabinet legs are installed because the weight will trap the floor.
also make sure the vapour barrier fits 100% of the room not...

you can get some quality engineered planks on the market.
i have seen an 8mm oak veneer on a marine ply 12mm.
this was a quality engineered but when down the one strip finish was as good as any solid.
i always say - your heart will buy solid wood - your head will but engineered.
while it is a fair price you get what you pay for.
you can lay as a floating floor but make sure your subfloor is dry and level.
