    Cracking BG800 series faceplates

Just to be clear, I was referring to switches not husbands :-):-)

    Cracking BG800 series faceplates

The 2-gang is in a 35mm Appleby drywall box, with one cable for each gang, so there ought not to be a problem. The 3-gang I have yet to take off to see what is behind it.

    Cracking BG800 series faceplates

Years ago, when doing any redecoration in my house, I took the opportunity to replace any old light switches and 13A sockets in the room, using whatever make/model was readily available at the time. However, that has led to something of a mish-mash of styles across the whole property, so...

    Doorbell transformer query

Just out of curiosity really.... In our hallway there is an old Friedland 551 mechanical 'ding dong' chime. As we are redecorating my wife wants to replace it with "something neater", so probably a Friedland / Honeywell D117 or similar. No problem there. The bell power comes from an old grey...

    Socket alteration for dry-walling

Apparently mounting the plasterboard on battens fixed to the wall. Having sadly proved a little bit unreliable so far - not turning up on the agreed days etc - I'm reluctant to start altering anything until I know he is on site. (Gone too far really to get someone else in to finish the work.)...

    Socket alteration for dry-walling

I agree with your concluding sentiment :-) 'Fortunately' I think he is planning just to cut the holes in the plasterboard and leave me to do the actual connections, which I would prefer. Overall he's full of assurances that "it will all be fine", but far less forthcoming on the actual details...

    Socket alteration for dry-walling

I'm having some redecoration done in my hall. One small wall has always suffered from cold/damp for various reasons, so the contractor has proposed to dry-line the wall - I've no problem with that. In that wall, down near the skirting board, is a 2-gang socket which feeds the telephone...

    Curious stray voltage

There are two lighting circuits in my house, one upstairs and one downstairs. The upstairs circuit loops through a ceiling rose which supports a pendant light on the landing. There is a 1.0mm T&E cable from the rose to a 1-gang 2-way switch on the landing and then a 3&E cable from that switch to...

Electric towel rail in Zone 1.

Oh good, one less thing to deal with !

Electric towel rail in Zone 1.

Meanwhile, on another aspect of the same job.... The existing towel rail has a specific bonding terminal built into its metalwork (separate from the earth terminal for the fly-lead) and currently this is bonded to the pipework under the bath, which in turn is bonded to the MET at the meter...

Electric towel rail in Zone 1.

The FCU is outside of the bathroom, as I explained above, so I'm not sure its IP rating is relevant. As far as I can tell the flex outlet is just the 'normal' type used elsewhere in the house (eg for an immersion heater) so I doubt that it would have a suitable IP rating, which is why I'm...

Electric towel rail in Zone 1.

Actually, I did not understand that reference either :-) If the equipment is rated as (say) IPX5 or IP55 then surely it is 'suitable for the environment' - in this case Zone 1 - by that fact. Whether that equipment is then connected to a live supply by a means that is NOT suitable for use in...

Electric towel rail in Zone 1.

I'm not sure, but I've come across it in some online searches about Zone 1 restrictions. As regards reversible connections, some rails appear to be offer that facility, but others don't. I suspect that the existing rail was installed originally with a 'flex outlet' simply because that was the...

Electric towel rail in Zone 1.

There is an electric towel rail in my bathroom which I intend to replace by a new one when I refurbish the bathroom in due course. The towel rail is located in Zone 1 above the non-tap end of the bath (for the simple reason that is no room anywhere else in the small bathroom for it) so I shall...

Temporary capping off a live cable

I do have some small 'quick wire' JBs that I was thinking of using, just wondered if they would be necessary. The 'hole' is actually the space under the floorboards between two parallel joists, so plenty of room there once I can get the cable past the noggins :-)
