    Unvented/G3 ongoing install sanity check

Ok, the penny is starting to drop. So the boiler protection is checking the boiler water temp. Which has more chance of being over 5C, due to reasons you state. E.g. Boiler could be 10c due to residual heat, but garage air temp (and therefore frost stat) could be reading <5c, and impacting pipe...

Understand that, but my question/confusion is around the fact the boiler has frost protection too, also set at 5C. Does that not do the same thing? Circulating the same hot water through the same circuit? I.e. why does this scenario need an external frost or pipe stat at all?

Our room thermostat - Hive - has a frost setting that kicks in at 7c.

Hmm. How does the boiler protect itself? Surely by switching on the burner and pump? If yes, then at a minimum that circulates hot water via the bypass valve, which is therefore protecting flow/return pipes inside garage. 2 port valve on CH does not need to open, rads don't need protecting...

As an aside, the Ideal Logic+ System is confusing when it comes to frost protection. The boiler manual says it has built in frost protection for 5c and below. But then in the same manual it also says that if the boiler is installed in a cold place, (ours is in garage), then a frost stat should...

Thanks for the response and if you read the follow-up posts you will see that on this particular model of inlet combination valve, the plastic plug is not removable. You will also see in later posts with updated pics, that the vessel has not being repiped in the correct position after the...

Doing final snagging and noticed the unvented PRV/TPRV > tundish > drain looks incorrect. It's got the right drop on the D2, but after that its just plumbed in to bathroom waste under bath, and shared with bath, standard pipe. It seems this breaks regs in 3 ways; - cannot share waste with...

Thanks for the attention to detail, on some level I want you to pick this apart, reason for posting etc... Context would be that this won't be the most service friendly of installs, as its shoe horned in to an airing cupbaord. I wanted it in the garage, but the special lagged solar flow/return...

Because that pipe is the balanced cold to the mixer shower, and originally did not have an isolation valve. I asked them to fit one, in case the shower has issues with new pressure (the hot has an isolator). They cheaped out and fitted a 15mm that they had, rather than buying a 22mm. It goes to...

Assuming you mean the 2-port honeywell valve that is between the boiler flow and cylinder right? This has a wire coming out of it, that goes in to a 10-way wiring box on the floor. I assume, rightly or wrongly, that this valve is therefore controlled via the Thermostat that lives in the...

Hi thanks for all the advice. Current state below, I've tried to pull together a diagram to 1) understand whats going on, and 2) make it easier for you fine folks to follow the pics. How are we looking now? (Ignoring how we got here!) Based on my armchair expert googling I cannot spot any...

I think Jim's point is that you don't need to take the balanced cold to every cold tap which was the original comment. You are both right, considerations should be made for any mixer units. After doing some further reading, I believe the reason the blend/TMV exists, is for 2 reasons in the...

Does not make sense for simple unvented design where solar is just being used as secondary coil for hot water. If hot water temp in the cylinder exceed 60c, the solar thermal wont heat the water beyond this. Just like a gas boiler would not. Edit. Unless I missed anything. Sorry, wanted to add...

Quite painful when its 50% done and we are without hot water/heating. But I suppose you are right, with a long term view, this does not get any better if I let work continue without escalating.

Thanks good to know. Will stick to the "dual chamber" mixers to avoid this in future. Sounds like its the least of my worries at the moment. To be fair, to pipe the balanced cold to every outlet in the house would be a nightmare plumbing job. For example the stopcock/mains feeds enters in the...
