thanks for the comments - if you'd read the whole chain of posts you would see that not only am I a novicesparky, I'm also a girl!! Am I supposed to know what voltage a house is....???
I was just testing!! Have called in an expert now - going to charge me £25 to fit the bloody thing -...
thanks anyway - I think I might just have to get an expertsparky in to do it - shame though - managed to virtually rebuild a house singlehandedly and now I'm outsmarted by a dimmer switch - such is life!!
the light bulbs are little 40w ones with little hooked wires on the bottom and there are eight in total (240w) the switch is up to 400w and has a picture of a lightbulb with a + and another picture and .... so I assume you can attach more than one bulb!
ok now i'm really baffled!!!
Have just connected another dimmer ( which I know was working about 5 minutes ago!!) I've tried all the red wire combinations with the blacks in the block and they don't work!!! I know the lights work, I know the switch works so what have I done wrong??
looks like we're getting somewhere - just done the two reds and two black thing and the lights have come on!!! that just means I've buggered the switch!! - just need to blag a replacement from the diy store now - not beyond my realms of capability ( unlike wiring a dimmer switch!!!) thanks guys! x
I've just tried putting one of the reds in L2 but that hasn't worked either!!
If you can bear to reply again(!) please just talk to me in wire colours - I am a novice (and a girl!)
have just rewired switch with blacks in terminal block and tried the two red wires in both holes but still no joy!!
Maybe I/ve buggered the switch by connecting the wrong way?? any other suggestions?
thanks - will try that but think that may have been one of the combinations I've already had a go at!! I don't get why the blacks don't go in anywhere - they do on the switch for the main ceiling lights!! Does it matter which red goes in which hole?
