thanks - we will try doing this. we tried taking both stats out but it didnt work - maybe we didn't do it properly just noticed a broken link pin / connector but to be honest have no idea where it would have come from. there is only one currently in the wiring - could this be the problem?

i have returned everything to its original settings and removed the new one to try and get us back to square one but still nothing is happening. i also tried taking out the original timer and just using the new independant thermostat. is this wrong? the instructions weren't so clear...
