    I've tried! I got a seat cutter from Wickes which shaved a little off, but the groove was still pretty deep (1-2mm). Then I cut the end of the cutter and attached it to my drill and it still doesn't make much difference to the tap seat. I get shiny copper but it looks like it'd take years to...

    Yep! That's correct. I thought the jumper and washer were supposed to just pull out.
