    Bottoms up?

ChrisR - sorry to queue-jump but, in case you missed it, I'd be really grateful for a comment on this. Paul

    Bottoms up?

EEK! Never come across that one before (OK, tell me to search). Are you saying lime etc is less harmful than the by-products of a softener? What chlorides? The manufacturer claims no NaCl remains in the supply after regeneration. Do you also suggest the F&E should be fed from the mains -...

    Bottoms up?

I cannot thank you guys enough (where's Oilman, the miserable sdo?) for the earlier advice. This trick has worked a treat. Now waiting for the explosion. (Edited to add description of Oilman)

    Bottoms up?

ChrisR - what took you so long? You guys are marvels. Actually, I'd be filling from the cold header tank rather than mains, to use softened water. Makes no difference presumably - it's still a head & shoulder above the CH feed tank.

    Bottoms up?

Yikes that was quick. Thanks Chris (it was your original observation, wasn't it?). Makes sense to me - it would drive air upwards too. A goldfish wouldn't survive 30 secs in this water.

    Bottoms up?

Busy here, innit. Right, we've converted the feed and vent to a combined F&E and it all works jubbly. No pumping over and tank stays cold. However, refilling the system took ages, as ChrisH (or was it R?) warned a while ago, due to air and water on a collision course up the one remaining...

    OFTEC bleeder?

In fairness to the supplier, their current price is lower than any of several I found on the internet. But maybe these people jack them up as they are not, by nature, "local"suppliers. :?:

    OFTEC bleeder?

Been with them in their various guises for 18 years, flawless payment record. Good enough? I tried "offering them chance to fix it" but couldn't even raise anyone, it being a Friday evening. We await developments. Thanks, everyone, for your advice.

    OFTEC bleeder?

This is getting ridiculous. I delay responding for 12 hours and the post is already half way down Page 2. Think of it as a fan club, guys. Your reply is much appreciated, Oilman. We knew you'd have the answer. Not a question of "thinking" - it actually happened. Oil ran out because supplier...

    OFTEC bleeder?

Have done that, Breezer - indeed scanned every reference to OFTEC - but can't see anything close enough. It was easier searching the ODPM's site - there's less of it

    OFTEC bleeder?

Do you have to be OFTEC registered to bleed an airlocked oil line? What would be the consequences of a competent (small C) general plumber doing the job? Could someone point me to the official wording? I've spent several hours surfing for the information (now seeing double at ODPM's Part J...

    CORGI job?

Must you be CORGI registered to hitch a kitchen hob to a gas bottle?

    Oil fired car

Mod, have you nothing better to do? This is (or started out as) a discussion about central heating oil. And a rather interesting one at that.

    Oil fired car

Presumably that's why the bad boys throw a dollop of engine oil in the mix, as described by Paul B above.
