Thanks for the response, now I just have to try and loosen the thing!

I am removing a rad for decorating. One valve is pretty straight forward but I have a Drayton TRV-4 thermostatic valve and am confused as to which nut I loosen to drain. Is it the larger nut close to the actual control or the smaller nut that goes into the radiator.
