    trimming rafters

I'm building an extension, and I need to trim some rafters that come down to a wallplate at head height, as there's a door going in. If I double up the rafters either side, do I need to double up the whole length to the ridge? Or can I stop at a purlin above where I'll cut the rafters?

    Timber cladding detail around windows

Hi, I'm building a timber frame, timber clad extension. I'm fitting painted timber windows, and am rather confused about the detailing around the window. Everything I can find mentions preformed flashings at the head. Does anyone know where I can get these, and what they're called...

    Underpinning old walls

Hi, I'm building an extension (I'm not a builder, but I've renovated a few houses and can do most things!), and want some advice on underpinning. The project involves knocking down some of an existing single storey extension to the house, and building a 2 storey timber frame extension. It...

    new Part L zone requirements

hmm... reading that document, in table 10 it says: "Dwellings with a total usable floor area up to 150m2 should be divided into at least two space heating zones with independant temperature control, one of which is assigned to the living area." Oh well... guess we'll have to have 2 zones.

    new Part L zone requirements

I'm fitting heating upstairs in our house, and I came across something saying that BR Part L requires separate zoning for sleeping areas. I've taken a look at part L, and can't see it mentioned anywhere. I was planning on fitting three radiators in the three bedrooms, each with a TRV. But...

Before I go ahead and destroy my central heating...

Thanks for the suggestions... I'm not a fan of combis... one of the main reasons I want to sort the heating out is cos I miss the power shower from my old house! Also we're on oil, and I've heard oil combi boilers are next to useless. We're also probably going to install another shower, so...

Before I go ahead and destroy my central heating...

In short... we've bought a new house and are in the process of renovating/extending it, and need to make some changes to the central heating (install radiators upstairs, and move/upgrade the hot water cylinder, relocate header tank as it's on the same level as upstairs radiators...). Now, I...

Gas cooker + gas boiler in kitchen - air requirements?

The boiler is an Ideal mexico super rs 55 - and it has a balanced flue. Now that I know that, and what it means, I can completely ignore the boiler in terms of air consumption. The room is also bigger than the instructions for the cooker say it needs to be (in terms of ventilation) so all is...

Gas cooker + gas boiler in kitchen - air requirements?

Yes... it's in a cupboard. Oddly it was in a cupboard before, with no vents. My plan was to install a vent in the plinth at the bottom of the cupboard. There are also a couple of sizeable holes (10cm*10cm) into the airing cupboard in the next room where the pipes go through the wall. I'll...

Gas cooker + gas boiler in kitchen - air requirements?

It has got a big square flue going straight out the back through the wall, so balanced I guess! I can't remember the model of it (and I'm not at home at the moment to check). One other thing - is there any minimum distance that needs to be between the cooker and the boiler?

Gas cooker + gas boiler in kitchen - air requirements?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. It's an old (probably 80s) floor standing system boiler.

Gas cooker + gas boiler in kitchen - air requirements?

I'm currently installing a new kitchen. There is a boiler in the kitchen, and we're having a gas cooker installed. Now, regarding ventilation, the manual just says: "If there are any other fuel burning appliances in the same room the current edition of BS 5440: Part 2: should be consulted to...
