Using normal bulbs. Tried energy saver bulb in the table lamp but oviuosly the bulb just flickers.

I'am trying to fit a dimmer switch to a floor standing lamp. I purchased one from Amazon, which plugs into the wall socket, then you plug the appliance into the dimmer switch. It works fine with the table lamp, but not with the floor lamp. I'am now going to purchase a normal dimmer switch...
