yes i do have a vertical sight tube on the tank. if the on/off valve is faulty i will have to wait for the plumber tomorrow :(

yes my burner is bright red but it doesnt look like any of those pictured.
yes my plumber suggested the oil may have turned waxy. i haven't run out of oil in years but there is air in the fuel line i can see it when trying to get the oil thru
i've managed to do it before when i ran out of oil once. this time tho, i wonder whether its actually dragging air in. or whether the cold has had an effect. it was minus 13 here last night
