    It could be better, you're right. I have taken the advice received here and replaced the pipework with a proper trap and so far, all is well. The other stuff is functional and trouble free so I will let it lie for now. Cheers.

    Perhaps the issue is that it's a shared pipe with dishwasher and washing machine, an inherited setup. More gunk buildup.
