Chimney Stack being taken out - what happens to Gas fire?

Thanks for the response. What's a b/f fire? We were thinking of having an electric fire in its place, as the room is just too cold to rely on the radiator.

Chimney Stack being taken out - what happens to Gas fire?

Hi there, I'm having the loft converted in a few weeks and we've decided to have the Chimney stack taken out as it runs right through the middle of the house. We're only having it removed in the loft and left in the bottom two floors of the house. We also have a gas fire in the sitting...

    Bath tap won't switch off

The toilet was flushed in our bathroom and suddenly hot water came out of the bath tap, which isn't even switched on! I can't switch it off, although when we flush the toilet, it subsides, before starting again. Any thoughts?!

    rafter insulation - essential?

Hi everyone. my attic space is currently a bit of a mess and i want to smarten it up. At the moment, half of the floor is boarded up (i think larger joists have been used for this section, but i will pull a board up and confirm it) and the roof tiles are exposed, letting in a lot of dirt...

    No Felt under Tiles

Hi Beeny, i'm in the exact same position - how did you end up going about preventing the dust from coming in? I've just been quoted three grand for the spray foam method - sod that.

What to do with a 20 amp fuse...

Sounds a nightmare, but needs doing, i suppose. Thanks for the advice! But I like using the quote button...

What to do with a 20 amp fuse...

Right, i had a closer look at the fuse and the old wire on it is 5A - should have worked that out from the start! At least that's solved one problem. One of the fuse boxes (kitchen) is newer than the other two, but presumably we'd want to be working off one fuse box? What are we talking for...

What to do with a 20 amp fuse...

Hmm, well perhaps it does more than the lights, but at the moment everything else is working fine in the house aside from the lights. We have three separate fuse boxes - one does the kitchen, one does the sitting room downstairs and the bedrooms upstairs and the other (as far as i could tell)...

What to do with a 20 amp fuse...

I got home last night to find the lights had all gone out in the house - after much searching i finally found the fuse box and the fuse which had blown (see picture). It looks extremely old but i assume all i need to do is replace the fuse wire and it should be fine again. However, it says...

What to do with old boiler

I imagine the latter! Will i need an air vent regardless of having a new boiler put in? If so, is it a CORGI job?

What to do with old boiler

Having moved house a few months ago, we decided it was time to get someone in to have a look at the boiler and let us know where we stand pre-winter. So we signed up to British Gas' HomeCare and got someone out to do a check. Straight away, we were told two things: the air vent in the...

    Manhole in the garden...

Thanks for the suggestions! So where would i start to look for getting it replaced?

    Manhole in the garden...

...what do i do about this?! It's ugly, protruding and in a position where decking isn't apropriate. I emailed the local council but they said neither they nor Yorkshire Water would do anything about it, as it's on land I own. Anyone know how easy/cheap it is to get these replaced with...
