    Hanging cabinets on mdf panels

How big? I suspect there’s 9mm mdf, 15-20mm gap, then the plaster then the brick. Also the cabinet has 4 holes in the back metal plate to attach it.

    Hanging cabinets on mdf panels

Hi there, I have a couple of 7.5kg (16.5lb) glass and metal cabinets that I want to hang on a wall that has 9mm marine mdf t&g panelling nailed to thin battens on a plastered brick wall. I’m sort of struggling to decide what sort of fixing to use. Normally I’d use hammer-in fixings but I...

Belt sander for stair treads and risers

This so helpful! yes, the existing paint is a water-based floor paint and it’s definitely clogging up the edging sander’s pads. The reason I stripped the spindles and risers was because I simply couldn’t sand them into a state that was even half decent looking. There is 100 years of paint...

Belt sander for stair treads and risers

Or perhaps the Makita 9911 which is only 2.5kg? Same price as the 9400 though.

Belt sander for stair treads and risers

Thank you, this is really helpful, I have a Bosch multi sander as well as a sheet sander (which honestly is my second and I find them fairly useless). I have already stripped the stringers and spindles with a heat gun which has taken months (basically trying to fit it in between my full time...

Belt sander for stair treads and risers

Hey all, I’m a competent(ish) DIYer looking to buy a belt sander to finish the treads and risers on my stairs and struggling to decide: https://www.screwfix.com/p/makita-m9400-4-electric-belt-sander-240v/4558r obviously a good brand but I’m concerned about the weight (6kg) as I’m female and my...

Best water-based primer/undercoat for bare softwood

Thanks for your replies. They will be painted and there is nothing at all on them now - just bare wood - they've been stripped within an inch of their lives.

Best water-based primer/undercoat for bare softwood

I've read a few threads about primers, but I want to make sure I've get the best answer for my particular situation. My 100+ year old pine doors have been stripped of 100+ years of paint but are in pretty awful shape - lots of grain, scratches and gouges. I've filled and sanded but now trying...

What do I do about this damaged internal corner?

Nice. I have the toupret fine surface filler which is pretty amazing so good to know this is quality as well. “No thickness limitation” - excellent. Thank you!

What do I do about this damaged internal corner?

My lockdown project has taken on a life of its own and after years of painting over the terrible wallpaper in my hall, I’m now removing it. Most of the plaster underneath is surprisingly sound, if a bit rough. However, this one corner is in particularly bad shape (see photo). How should I...

    Stripping paint on Victorian woodwork

Ah, I hadn’t thought of shellac. That’s an interesting turn up. The house is 120 years old though - isn’t it pretty much a given that the first coat of paint is lead-based? Even if they waited until the 60s to paint the trim?

    Stripping paint on Victorian woodwork

Hi diynot folk, I’m trying to get my Victorian skirting and dados in better shape for painting. I tried the sand and fill method but it still looked clogged and messy. I’m now attempting to strip them down with Nitromors but that last layer of (lead) paint is not budging. What recommendations...

Kitchen waste moved to underfloor drain - vent?

That’s very helpful! No, it’s only about a 150cm straight run and attached to the top of the soil pipe.

Kitchen waste moved to underfloor drain - vent?

I’ve read the document and it’s not terribly clear. It’s also good to know what to ask my plumber for. They’ve not suggested it’s required but I generally only know what to ask by asking here or googling. I appreciate the warning. I’ll ask them to explain the relevant document to me. Before...
