Using voltage converters UK -> Canada

Is anyone able to tell me in very simple terms whether voltage transformers will enable pretty much any UK electrical item to be used in Canada (110v, 60 Hz)? And will they change the duply from 60Hz to 50 Hz? we are emigrating pretty soon (next month, I hope) and I was wondering about our...

    Moving to Canada

I am still in the UK, but someone gave me some advice on this, which might be worth sharing. Apparently, in Canada (and the US, I should imagine) cookers run off a 220v supply, and it is not difficult to run a cable or two at that voltage to other parts of the house. Especially as most houses...

    Very hot radiators; cold water

The plumber came today. He replaced the whole three way valve unit, including the motor, and we have lashings of hot water again. :D :D Thanks, Chris R.

    Er, yes.

    Moving to Canada

Is there any way of knowing whether something is compatible for use with other power levels, other than waiting to see if it blows up...? I guess what you're saying is that, if in doubt, get a transformer, such as found in the link in your first message.

I guess he has nothing to lose if the motor is universal. I shall let you people know how we get on. Meanwhile, thanks again. :D

Oh dear. I think that's what he is going to get. I wasn't around when he popped round earlier. Oh well, we shall see...

    Very hot radiators; cold water

I don't think I would feel confident enough to do that, and my wife would probably be even less confident about me doing it! The plumber is trustworthy enough, anyway, I think, but if he charges too much more than £30 for the motor, I might begin to ask questions. Also, he spent a bit of time...

    Moving to Canada

Thanks, people. It seems that this is going to be easier and cheaper than I had dared to hope. Not sure if the computer has a switch to enable it to run on 110v and 60Hz. It is a bit awkward to check, but it doesn't seem that it will be a problem anyway. I'll also want to take our nice...

    Very hot radiators; cold water

In case anyone is interested, the bit we need, apparently, is a motor that helps the three way valve to do its thing. We should have hot water again by Wednesday, with any luck. No news yet on the price though... :?

    Very hot radiators; cold water

Many thanks again. The rads seem to be heating up more than ever, and the water is stone cold. It is sometimes slightly warm to begin with, but my guess is that the pipes carrying the water to the taps are close to a radiator or a pipe leading to a radiator, and the water is being heated in...

    Very hot radiators; cold water

I have just remembered that, some time in the summer, the radiators came on for no apparent reason. It might be irrelevant, but could that be related to the same thing?

    Very hot radiators; cold water

Thank you! That was a quick! Unfair question coming up: is that likely to be a madly expensive thing to get fixed, if it is hat you think it might be?

    Moving to Canada

We are hoping to move to Canada in the next few months (my wife is Canadian so it shouldn't be as problem). We don't intend to take much electrical equipment, but I was wondering if anyone was able to advise, please, on whether it would be simple to take our computer and my guitar amlifier...

    Very hot radiators; cold water

In the last few days, our boiler (Chaffoteaux & Maury Britony Combi) has been acting strangely, in that it has been reluctant to heat water. The radiators are working fine - if anything they are hotter than before. In the last few days, we simply turned the tap off and tried again, and it...
