    Question on sub-distribution boards

There feed to the garage ends in a fuse box that has a single 30mA rcd covering the 2 sockets and a lighting circuit (and a few blanks). So although the swa running from the house to the garage doesn't have it's own rcd, I think everything in the garage is protected by a local rcd.

    Question on sub-distribution boards

There's a 100mA Type-S (time delay?) RCD in a small box with the main isolation switch right next to the electric meter in the outside meter box, with a big chunky SWA cable running into the house and under the floors for a few metres straight to the consumer unit under the stairs. The main...

    Question on sub-distribution boards

I was thinking this originally, but when I ran it through my head in terms of what would happen under a fault, I was worried this could leave me stranded in a dark shed without an easy way of restoring power. Ideally, I'd just want a minimally protected SWA cable (not sure what protection...

    Question on sub-distribution boards

Hi All, I'd like to run power to a shed, and have a quick question on whether something is allowable under the various electrical regulations. We currently have a consumer unit pretty much in the centre of the downstairs floor of the house (under the stairs). This then has a thick 16mm2 SWA...

A couple of quick plumbing questions (water and central heating pipe runs)

Good morning everyone, We've recently had the subfloor in our hallway lifted to replace a few bad joists, and I have a couple of questions about the pipes it uncovered if anyone can help: 1) Some pipes run across a few of the joists in notches cut in the tops. It looks like some carpet...

Do I need an Earth Rod Fitted?

It's mainly for peace of mind rather than anything else. The electrics haven't been checked for over 15 years, and we've had mouse problems (with lots of gnawing noises coming from under the floorboards), leaking showers, rotted joists and various other issues since then. With two small...

Do I need an Earth Rod Fitted?

Hi everyone, I noticed the inspection sticker on our consumer unit earlier this week and realised we are horribly ovdue an EICR check, which I am planning to get booked in, but there is one thing I wanted to bounce off the gurus in this forum first. We currently have a powered shed with its...

    Replacing water damaged plasterboard

Thanks for the quick reply - something like you are suggesting was along the lines of what I was thinking. Sounds like it's worth a go, and I'll give it a try with a wood chisel.

    Replacing water damaged plasterboard

Hi everyone, We've had a leak around the seal of our shower upstairs (silicone failure), which has then resulted in water pouring onto the ceiling in the kitchen to the point where the kitchen plasterboard has now bowed and started disintegrating. I've now re-siliconed the shower, and pulled...

    Tentest board

Hi, Has anyone ever encountered a ceiling made of Tentest (Essex) board? The ceiling in our hallway look like a regular smooth plastered ceilings, but it is horribly bowing and sagging between joists, and from when smoke alarms were fitted a few years back, we have been told they are made out...

Downstairs hall light on upstairs circuit

Thanks for the quick reply - that's a big relief. The hall light is definitely on the upstairs RCD and circuit breaker, so I'll just write "+ Hall" to the circuit label on the fisebox lid and leave it at that.
