Thanks for all the help so far. I have checked the connection at the house wall, and after digging out stray lumps of plaster & render I can now see that the exiting armoured cable leaves through a threaded connector at the side of the metal box then through the wall. Is it a fair assumption...

The buildings will both be timber construction - the garage having a concrete floor, the workshop floor timber on top of concrete. The buildings will be about 12 metres from the house. The SWA armoured cable is 2.5mm twin core.
