Hi, It really depends on your setup. If the wiring is looped at the switch and the lights are daisy chained there could be a fault between the switch and the first light. Identifying the first light in the circuit is probably the tricky part. On the other hand if the lights are looped...

Note if you have wired them in series then if one goes, they all go out and you'll have to revert to working in candle light until the culprit is identified :)

You could also disconnect all 4 downlights and then connect one by one starting at the first light from the switch. That will help you isolate the fault. Overheating is not a good sign. Remove any insulation around the lights and make sure you have fire hoods on each light unless they are Fire...

Thanks, I'll run T&E and anchor earth to a TB at the end. Regarding inspection: Is it OK to leave the junction box next to the light in the ceiling? That way it's always accessible via the light fitting.

Good stuff, thanks guys. The box with an o in it is my poor attempt at drawing a junction box :) The lights are double insulated so I wasn't planning to run an Earth (and there is no terminal on the casing). Thanks for the pointer on the joists. I'll be running the cables in the loft...
