I think something went wrong and all the bulbs blew, the spares didn't work at first until i removed the units and put them back in. hopefully its the same for you, easy fix.

sorry I forgot to update this, managed to get them working, I disconnected both sides from the cabling to test with my multimeter, got a bit confused and hooked them back up, the bulbs were nackered and needed replaced but my spare bulbs started working in them after I reconnected the units...

To use this thing to test continuity I need to stick one side in the connector at the end of the wire (from the multi plug thing that goes into the lights) and the other side needs to go onto the wire somewhere down the line to check if its getting power?

Once I get a chance il take a look at the wiring, I am wondering though, the tail lights work, as do the rear fog lights, would they be on a different wire then?

No change was noticable with the hazards on, I only have one functioning side light atm but it did not dim or anything when the brake pedal was pressed. for good measure I also tested with fog lights and stuff on to see and there was no dimming.

Would that thing I linked do the job? No Wilkinson around here, though I just popped into halfords and they have a mini multi meter at £20 or that thing I linked at 12.99, can afford either, which would you recommend?

What will I need to buy to test it, a multimeter/test probe like you said? I checked halfords and the multimeter is sittiing at almost 60 quid, can't see anything under test probe, is there another name for it?

No, the light that is mounted in the boot lid is the one that's still working. I only checked those cables as it was suggested on an MG forum as a possible cause, never made sense to me.

I had a similar problem with my car last year, turned out to be my brake disc was rubbing off my caliper a tiny bit every time the wheels turned (was quite apparant by that brake disc being extremely hot compared to the other 3) think it was slightly buckled. might be an idea to check that next...
