I've read that the best way to deal with bindweed is to place canes for it to climb up so that a systemic weedkiller can be directly applied to it and kill the whole plant, roots and all.

Thanks for that. It has given us a bit of breathing space til we can figure out whether the boiler will be replaced or repaired. Now if the weather were just a bit cooler it wouldnt be so bad having the heating on! Oh well I'll just have to have it on first thing in the morning and last thing...

The boiler, when it sees fit, lights and stays on and will usually stay on 'til the tap is turned off. Unfortunately once it has run for a time it refuses to come on again at all, sometimes for 24 hours! The central heating does not seem to be affected. If the black particles are perished...
