    Strengthening undersized joists

There are two joists in my upstairs extension floor that are 7x1 instead of 7x2 like the others. It's a Victorian house and there used to be a chimney at that end of the room, which they've removed. If I were to sister another 7x1 without going into the pockets the existing 7x1s are in (no room...

Letter from BC regarding unauthorised building works

Thanks Woody. I called them and explained that I'd had some minor roof repairs and they just noted it down and never got back to me. I'm having a loft conversion done soon, so they will presumably cast their eyes over the state of the roof then.

Letter from BC regarding unauthorised building works

Hi, I've had a letter through from building control stating that a neighbour has informed them I'm having work done without prior notice. I had the roof re-felted and the old tiles were re-used. I'm not a tradesman and the roofer didn't mention anything about building control notice but...

    Insulating a solid wall

Additionally, my current plan is to only insulate my external walls (internally) and my ground floor as it's suspended timber. Will this benefit my enough to bother doing or is all this retained heat going to go through the party walls into next door?

    Insulating a solid wall

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but guessing the plasterers will have an idea of what to do. I need to insulate the exterior walls internally but it's a double skinned, solid brick wall (Victorian mid-terrace). These walls have been damp in the past so I don't want to take any risks...

    Parapet repairs DIYable?

Just to update, I had several other roofers come to take a look. None of them got back to me, presumably because they wouldn't make enough money on it? One estimated £1400 with a further £500 max if there are unforeseen problems. This price was minus the scaffold which I've arranged for £450...

    Single pitched roof construction

Thanks for the replies everyone. I never received notifications so assumed nobody replied. Just to make is clear, it's the roof on top of the two storey extension, I'm well aware of the terrible state of the single extension. I've since removed the plasterboard ceiling and the rotting rafter...

    Single pitched roof construction

Is the construction method I've described unusual? I need to repair the deteriorating wood but no point if there's a flaw in the design and it's going to happen again. Is there a reason most of the photos I've seen differ to my roof? The way the roof is joined to the house also seems a bodge...

    Exposed Brick Preparation

I've stripped my walls back to brick in my bathroom and I'm trying to decide what to do with the surface now. There are a fair few pipes running around the perimeter, close to the walls. For this reason, it seems like battening out the walls may be appropriate and the pipework could be hidden...

    Single pitched roof construction

I'll get some photos up tomorrow when I visit the house next but I wonder if anyone can offer some insight into the design of the single pitched roof of the extension on my victorian terrace. All of the images of roofs I've looked at on google have the rafters overhanging the walls but on mine...

    Parapet repairs DIYable?

Hey, the roof of my Victorian terrace requires some repairs. The main roof is nothing fancy, standard gabble with an original double extension on the back with a single pitched roof on it. I've had a few roofers around to identify the issues and they are: - Both parapet walls need refurbishment...
