What is this and what does it do?

Thanks Dan. Exactly the info I needed, I've now learned a LOT more about why these are needed and how my whole system ties together. Thanks again!

    RCD will not stay on

Brilliant! You guys are awesome. Thanks for the great advice John. I'm so glad this is in past and I can laugh about it. I was not laughing when I was force-pulling that sucker (but spelled with an "f") out by the tail.

I was waiting for that comment!! :D No... just took me 3 months to upload the pics from my phone so I could post them. The smell was horrendous though!

Here is the reason why the RCD kept tripping!

What is this and what does it do?

Hi there, I'm trying to gain an understanding of my plumbing at home, and there is one valve that I don't understand the purpose of. See the attached pictures. It connects the flow and return pipes (in the cupboard where the hot water cylinder is). Could someone please tell me: - Why...

    RCD will not stay on

A thick cable comes out of the back of the cooker, and snakes away under the counters in the direction of the CU (which is under the stairs). If I shine a torch down there, I can see the cable disappearing into a hole in the wall. So there is definitely no switch in the kitchen. Given that there...

    RCD will not stay on

Well, thanks to the excellent advice and reassurance received here, I now have electricity back in my house! I was able to disconnect the cooker circuit with no issues -- I was very careful every step of the way, and ended up with a working RCD! So thank you very much everyone for your input...

    RCD will not stay on

Not that I'm aware of. Nothing was on, the two ovens have the usual selector and temperature knobs each (everything off/set to 0).

There's no clock in this cooker.

    RCD will not stay on

Thanks very much John. I'll take pictures before I remove anything. I don't have a meter. Will one of those little tester screwdrivers that you put your finger on the end of with a little light inside work/be safe? Thanks again!

    RCD will not stay on

Thanks John. Unfortunately not a lot of that makes sense, I'm not an electrician. My current line of thought is to disconnect the cooker circuit so I can hopefully get the rest of the house working, as it's going to take several days to get an electrician in to diagnose the actual problem.

    RCD will not stay on

I think the cooker MCB probably was tripped when I got home. It's just that I didn't think to take a photo before I started resetting everything to get the lights working. My reference to "after trying lots of things" is mainly that I don't remember what positions the various things were on the...

    RCD will not stay on

Hello there, this is my first post. I came home from 3 weeks away, to find some of the lights in the house weren't working. I also found that the fridge was off, and had completely defrosted (I had to throw away absolutely everything). Long story short, after trying lots of different things...
