    What is this metal work?

@23vc - Yes should have thought of that! Cheers!

    What is this metal work?

Good, as I thought, and I'm assuming the brown section (top left) is the wooden joist running off horizontally to the left. How close to the outer breezeblock wall would you expect the first joist to be hung, i.e. what gap might there be for routing a low voltage wire?

    What is this metal work?

I'm looking at using a hole drilled by a previous owner but which he never used. He was running a flex outside for a PIR light, but he drilled two holes before the third one he actually used for the flex. My purpose might be to run a low voltage power wire to an outside camera. I poked a...

New uPVC Soffits/Fascias - should the old wooden ones be removed?

So not a bodge. And I guess removing the barge boards from the gable ends might disturb the end tiles. How would you feel if the contractor did all this on a ladder? It's a normal two story house with the gable ends quite a pronounced peak above the upper floor, such that you can stand up in...

New uPVC Soffits/Fascias - should the old wooden ones be removed?

Thanks. Obviously I'd be in their hands re them owning up if there was rot up there and not just ploughing on, I suppose. Why would new builds not start out with uPVC, let me guess, cheapest way of doing it?

New uPVC Soffits/Fascias - should the old wooden ones be removed?

I'm considering having my old wooden soffits & facias (and attached guttering) replaced by a firm that has done a nice looking work on a nearby house. Online reviews of the company look very good. The neighbour said that they fixed the uPVC over the old wood, saying that the wood wasn't too...

Does armoured cable to Garage need to be buried?

It's a probably 1995 fitted Memera 2000 with 2 empty fuse slots. One RCD protects three areas with the lights & immersion heater excluded from that. Is that too old?

Does armoured cable to Garage need to be buried?

I think I'm inclined to agree with what you and others are saying. In trying to keep the cost down, by keeping away from the older Consumer Unit, he's crossed into some questionable territory, using the Meter Box to house a consumer unit as you say and then the external armoured cable run. I...

Does armoured cable to Garage need to be buried?

What's the general feeling about the splitter unit he wants to put in meter box? Partly he was keeping away from an old Consumer Unit, and the outside run avoids floorboards etc. Is this an OK thing or a bit of a bodge?

Does armoured cable to Garage need to be buried?

Regarding an Electric Car charging point, I did casually raise this, not because I plan to get one (currently managing without any car) but as a future benefit whilst he was running a proper supply to the garage. His reply was to the effect that he didn't want to get involved in that, basically...

Does armoured cable to Garage need to be buried?

Yes! Henley block was what he said.

Does armoured cable to Garage need to be buried?

He said there was room in the Meter Box to put a splitter (it had a name which I forget) and that he'd run 4mm2 armoured. Now you mention it, it did cross my mind this wouldn't fuse the armoured run before the garage box, except for the 100A main fuse(!) What should he do there? Think he was...

Does armoured cable to Garage need to be buried?

Thanks for your answers. As these are being affected by the gravel width, I've looked more closely at the run in front of the house. Slabs have been laid, and peering behind the bins, not at an even distance all along the front of the house. Near the meter box there's just a 4 inch gap...

Does armoured cable to Garage need to be buried?

Thanks for your replies. I don't have a copy of the Regs, is it possible he might counter that as the gravel trench is just a few inches wide and right against the front of the house 'No one would reasonably dig there?'. Not defending the guy, just asking. Assuming you are confident this is...

Does armoured cable to Garage need to be buried?

Bit confused on this one. An electrician has quoted to run a supply to my adjoining garage. The route would be from the external meter box (splitting the heavy supply cable to Consumer Unit), dropping down a foot or so and into a narrow gravel trench running right in front of the house to hide...
