I understand you questioning the necessity, whether it's worth doing is a question for me to answer once I have a better understanding. I'm getting the room re-skimmed as there was shoddy work done by the previous owners, and there's a lot of shoddy work overall.

I'm planning on removing the existing casing and replacing it with a flat piece of timber, as we don't use the door at all. Can I do this with suitable sized pieces of Oak (or other, suggestions welcome) for example? Are there any traps to fall into here? I'm new and inexperienced so any insight...
