To add to my confusion, I cannot see the existing stat connections in the old timer - am I going mad?
This boiler is old old, not like my shiny new Worcester!
in fact, checking the diagram here for the zone wiring:

presume I just link the L to pin 1 and the boiler L, and the boiler N to pin 3?

I am trying to replace a conventional Potterton timer and stat with the above.
A fused spur feeds the Potterton timeclock, which then feeds the boiler when it is switched on.
The boiler is an old Glow Worm Space Saver which serves heating only. The boiler only has a single feed...
